Activities

UDLAPS offers a range of activities to foster professional involvement and development. The Assembly sponsors invited speakers, informal brown-bag discussions, and workshops. Current programs include:

Scholar and the Library
Founded in 1992, this popular campus lecture series features University faculty and graduate students who are invited to speak on their current research and use of library resources. The series facilitates the scholarly communication between library staff and the University research community. Recent speakers have included: Martin Brueckner, "Finding Maps: Carto-bibliography in American History and Practice"; George Basalla, "Aliens, Scientists, and Science Fiction"; Bonnie Maxwell, "Hepburn Redux: Rethinking the Myth"; Thomas Pauly, "Zane Grey, His Life, His Adventures, His Women"; Harry Shipman, "Tiny Stars: White Dwarfs and Brown Dwarfs Shine Feebly in the Dark Sky"; Persephone Braham, "Gender and Monstrosity in Latin America and the Caribbean"; and Carol Henderson, "Shadow Boxing: Race and Representation in Visual and Print Media".

Current Issues in Academic Librarianship
Professional library staff are invited to speak on emerging issues within their areas of expertise as part of this informal series. Recent topics have included: "Automation Trends in Government Documents," "The MLS: An Evolving Degree," and "Post-MLS Resident Programs: Enhancing the Development of New Professionals and Minority Recruitment in Academic and Research Libraries."

Mentoring Program
Established in 1993, the program helps to provide professionals with peer counselors and role models. The program consists of three levels of mentoring relationships, each addressing the needs of professionals at particular stages of their careers. The program is administered by the Mentoring Coordinator, who facilitates confidential matches between participants. Mentoring guidelines are available on the University of Delaware Library Assembly of Professional Staff (UDLAPS) Guidelines Web Page.

Dossier Preparation Workshop
Since 1991, UDLAPS has presented this annual program to serve individuals interested in discussing the University of Delaware Library rank and promotion process. The workshop offers instruction on the promotion process, tips on preparing dossiers, and the opportunity to examine sample dossiers.

Library Student Assistant Scholarship
UDLAPS has established a scholarship of $750.00 for a University of Delaware Library student assistant who will be attending a graduate library education program. More information about the UDLAPS Student Assistant Scholarship is available at http://www.lib.udel.edu/udlaps/activities/scholarshipinfo.htm.
