Scope and Content Note

<note>
This volume contains notes taken by Issac F. R. Mulock of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during lectures given by Dr. Henry McMurtrie on physics and anatomy and by John S. Hart on the history of public schools in Philadelphia. McMurtrie's lectures were given in 1845 and Hart's were given at Central High School (Philadelphia) in 1847.
</note>

The front cover of the volume features the abbreviation "C.H.S." and the name Mulock, indicating Issac Mulock's affiliation with Central High School. On the inside of the front cover, Mulock's address is listed as "Germantown Road above Thompson St." Mulock's notes on Henry McMurtrie's lectures are divided into eight parts. The early lectures were on the nature and definition of human anatomy, and move on to the subject of chemical and organic elements. The lectures end with a discussion of the various "solids and fluids" of the body and their role in diseases such as diabetes.

Following the McMurtrie lectures are notes on a series of four lectures given by John S. Hart in 1847 on the history of public high schools in Philadelphia. Hart's talks cover the years 1839 to 1847 and discuss the improvements made in the public school system such as a reorganization of faculty structure, the election of a principal, a change in admissions policy, and organization of Saturday classes. The changes greatly improved the conditions of the schools and led to increased enrollment. Following the notes is one page featuring what appears to be handwriting practice.

Laid into the volume are a small drawing of the spine and vertebra, a piece of paper with notes, and an account list from 1850 which appears to be wages paid for some sort of work related to books.

The volume is bound in between paper-covered boards with a leather spine. The book is in fair condition, with the spine separating from the pages.
</scopecontent>
