Biographical Note

The poet W.D. Snodgrass was born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1926. He was educated at Geneva College in Pennsylvania and the University of Iowa (M.F.A., 1953). At Iowa he studied with the poet Robert Lowell and became one of the early practitioners of “Confessional” poetry. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1960 for his volume of poems, Heart’s Needle, and Other Poems. Snodgrass has received numerous grants and fellowships and has taught at Cornell, the University of Rochester, Wayne State University, and Syracuse University. From 1980 to 1994 he was Distinguished Professor of creative writing and contemporary literature at the University of Delaware. In addition to poetry he has published a volume of criticism (In Radical Pursuit, 1975) and translations from Italian and Hungarian literature. His papers are housed at the University of Delaware Special Collections Library.

Scope and Content Note

W. D. Snodgrass’s The Fuehrer Bunker: A Cycle of Poems in Progress was published in 1977, and The Fuehrer Bunker: the Complete Cycle in 1995, both by BOA Editions. The collection consists of a series of dramatic monologues by Hitler and his inner circle in the final days before the fall of Berlin in 1945. Snodgrass’s library for The Fuehrer Bunker consists of over 250 books, many of them annotated by the author, on Hitler, the Nazis, and World War II. The collection, together with theannotations, is a record of the poet’s research in preparation for his poem cycle.
