Biographical Note

John A. Munroe is the H. Rodney Sharp Professor of History, Emeritus, University of Delaware. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1914, and educated in the Wilmington public schools. He received a B.A. (1936) and an M.A. (1941) from the University of Delaware, and a Ph.D. (1947) from the University of Pennsylvania. Throughout his long career, Professor Munroe served as a high school teacher, a professor, a dean, and chairman of the history department. He has received numerous awards, and held numerous positions in the history community. A prolific and well published writer, the bulk of his research focuses on various aspects of Delaware History, a subject on which he is a noted authority.


Scope and Content Note

The John A. Munroe Papers collection consists of approximately 7 linear feet of material dating from 1851 to 2000, with the bulk of the material from 1917 to 2000. The collection includes much of the writing and correspondence of Professor Munroe, as well as material pertaining to his family, students, historical subjects and colleagues, including correspondence, photographs, publications, etc. The collection includes: photographs, correspondence, clippings, articles, programs, speeches, diaries, typescripts, contracts, lecture notes, periodicals, vitaes, certificates, drawings, reports, grades, flyers, manuscripts, postcards, ballots, autographs, bulletins, newsletters, pamphlets, interviews, Christmas cards, ledgers, settlement accounts, and brochures. Some of the material in this collection is restricted.
