Biographical Note

Irish poet Thomas Campbell (1777–1844) is often regarded as a transitional poet, following the style of the classical poetry of the eighteenth century, but incorporating the Romantic ideals of freedom over tyranny, patriotism, and social justice.

Scope and Content Note

Autograph letter signed from Thomas Campbell to Frederick De George. Campbell discusses a new poem he is writing and describes arrangements for having several of his other works, including Theodric and The Pleasures of Hope, translated into French. Campbell apologizes for his late reply and for not corresponding in French, but blames the ill health which recently kept him away from London in Cheltenham. He also asks what he needs to do "to be a candidate for the honour of a seat in the Academy."
