Scope and Content Note

The creator of this late nineteenth-century scrapbook is unknown, though the contents suggest that the compiler was a child who may have lived near Albany, New York. This scrap album includes chromolithographed scraps, trade cards, visiting cards, religious cards, and larger color-printed images.

The cover of this volume, which is in fragile condition with brittle pages and a broken spine, is decoratively embossed with the words "scrap album." Images within include several covers from Youth's Companion, a children's magazine published in Boston; trade cards for Ponds cream, Excelsior starch, J. & P. Coats thread, Clarks thread, and Pears soap. A set of seven cards for Higgins German laundry soap, as well as several cards for Eureka Poisoned Fly Plate depict African-Americans to advertise the product. A trade card from J. Mandelbaum Fine Shoes in Albany, New York, 1880, suggests that the child who created this album may have lived in the area. Visiting cards in the album bear the names Mrs. Frankie Knuck, Lucus Grimstead, Mamie Dykman, A. J. Cribs, Robbin Ragsville, and others.
