Reverend William Augustus Brewer was an avid bookplate collector. His wife, Augusta LaMotte Brewer, bequeathed his collection to the University of Delaware Library after her husband’s death.
The William Augustus Brewer bookplate collection comprises 12,680 printed bookplates dating mainly from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Many of the bookplates were from the libraries of famous individuals or produced by significant artists. The subjects of the illustrations are diverse, including depictions of nature, history, literature, and heraldic symbols.
The collection includes bookplates from the libraries of John Carter Brown, Lewis Carroll, Queen Charlotte, Samuel L. Clemens, Calvin Coolidge, Charles Dickens, Walt Disney, George III, Edward Gibbon, Alexander Hamilton, Harry Houdini, Samuel Pepys, Howard Pyle, Paul Revere, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Theodore Roosevelt, Alfred Stieglitz, William Wordsworth, and William Butler Yeats, as well as many others.
The designers of the bookplates include Thomas Bewick, Edward Burne-Jones, Kate Greenaway, William Hogarth, Howard Pyle, Rudolf Ruzicka, and James A. M. Whistler. Subjects illustrated in the bookplates are varied, including acrostics, birds, death’s heads, medicine, music, rebuses, and science and portraits of historical and literary figures.
In addition to the Brewer bookplates, the collection also includes reference books and journals about bookplates; photographic portraits of William Augustus Brewer and his wife, Augusta LaMotte Brewer; an address book listing individuals who donated material to the collection; metal and wood printing blocks; and bookplates added to the collection after it came to the University of Delaware Library.
Note: There is no pl. 117 in this collection.
The collection has been left with the same organization (alphabetical by the name of the owner) and in the same housings used by Rev. Brewer. In 1957, the University of Delaware Library produced an index to the collection, which is included in this finding aid. The index is organized alphabetically by artists, owners, and subjects. Photographs of the Rev. and Mrs. Brewer are also included in the collection, under the numbers 12225 and 12226.
The finding aid also includes materials that were added to the collection after it arrived at the University of Delaware Library. These items include additional bookplates, reference books, and journals. A list of the added bookplates is included in the finding aid, as is a bibliography of the books and journals.
