Description:

Printer, book designer, and typographer John Anderson founded Pickering Press in 1946 and began his collaboration with wood engraver John DePol in the early 1950s  During the course of their collaboration, they became life-long friends.  In fact, their relationship continued until Anderson’s death in 1997.  The partnership of Anderson and DePol had a profound effect on the careers of both men.  DePol provided engravings for many of Anderson’s clients as well as Anderson’s personal stationery and press marks.  They shared opinions and provided support for each other’s projects.  Some of the significant work generated by this partnership include projects for the University of Pennsylvania and the Club of Odd Volumes, as well as A Commonplace Book and Words of the Masters.

The material in this series documents the collaboration between DePol and Anderson and provides an excellent sampling of the publications of the Pickering Press.  It should be noted that Special Collections also has an archive of John Anderson papers which includes woodblocks created by DePol for Pickering Press publications.
