Written materials
Other writings by Alexander Biddle are preserved in Mss 314 Rush family
papers, including Alexander Biddle's drafts for his unpublished Dr. Benjamin
Rush in the opinion of his revolutionary contemporaries, a reply to the interested
prejudice of a recent writer, and the typescripts for his published (1892) Old
family letters copied from the originals for Alexander Biddle, series A.
109 Speech for Girard College, n.d. (13 pp.)
This manuscript may relate to the 1893 speech Alexander Biddle gave at Girard
College, which was mentioned by Cheesman A. Herrick in his History of Girard
College (Philadelphia: Girard College, 1927).
110 Speech for the Pennsylvania Hospital, n.d. (2 pp.)
Discusses period since May 1890
111 Civil War narrative, [draft A], n.d.
Thirteen leaves, paginated A-M, with one FF 1/2. Some of the text is written on
stationery of the Hotel Continental, Biarritz, dated 188-. This complete draft, with
limited annotations, is the Civil War narrative of Alexander Biddle published on
pages 119-125 of History of the 121st Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers
(Philadelphia: Burke and McFetridge, 1899)
112 Civil War narrative, [draft B], n.d.
Another draft of the above text, this copy is incomplete and consists of eleven
leaves paginated A-K. This draft bears light annotations and is written entirely on
the stationery of the Hotel Continental, Biarritz, dated 188-
113 Civil War narrative, [various pages], n.d.
Three pages from another draft of the above text: A, F, and G. These pages also
bear light annotations and two were written on stationery of the Hotel Continental,
Biarritz, dated 188-
114 Other Civil War writings, n.d.
Includes three half-pages on Pennsylvania Railroad stationery dated 188-,
describing an unidentified battle; one draft of an undated letter addressed to
"General," and two pages of a Civil War draft covering Sep-Oct 1862, which
appears to be Biddle's account of the Battle of Fredericksburg, as was published in
the History of the 121st Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers (Philadelphia:
Burke and McFetridge, 1899).

115 Draft for a biography, n.d. (5 pp)
Annotated; this may be a more developed version of the biography of Alexander
Biddle which appeared in William Bender Wilson's second volume of his History
of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company (1899). The third page of this manuscript
bears a strong resemblance to the printed biography.

Smith, Francis A. Jackson, Charles W. Henry, Pauline Biddle, Louis A. Biddle,
Julia Dunlap, and Nannie Dunlap.
118 Papers, n.d.
Contains calling cards, the Biddle coat of arms, material related to the Franklin
and Bristol Turnpike Road and the Roslyn Heights Stock Farm. Invitations are
included from General George Cadwalader and Arthur Biddle.
119 Civil War photographs, n.d.
One photograph recognizable as captain William White Dorr, photographed by F.
Gutekunst, Philadelphia.
Two identical, later, portraits of Alexander Biddle in his uniform, also taken by F.
Gutekunst and which retain their original glassine envelopes. These two portraits
may have been related to the production of History of the 121st Regiment of
Pennsylvania Volunteers (1893) for which F. Gutekunst did much of the
photographic work. This image of Alexander Biddle, however, was never
included.
120 Photographs of family art, n.d. (4 items)
Three identical photographs represent two portrait paintings, and one other
photograph depicts the same two portrait paintings and one other. One of the
paintings is identifiable as a portrait of Clement Biddle (1740-1814) painted by
Bernard Uhle. The other two individuals represented are presumably his first and
second wives, Mary Richardson (d. 1773), and Rebekah Cornell. These are
presumably the paintings that Alexander Biddle lent to the Pennsylvania Academy
of Fine Arts in 1887 and 1888 for their Loan Exhibition of Historical Portraits,
and are represented as catalog numbers 29-30.
