SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

The great depth of the holdings in science and technology reflects the University of Delaware's program and research strength in these areas. The collections are strongest in the history of chemistry and engineering. The core of these holdings is the Unidel History of Chemistry Collection which contains nearly three thousand primary sources in the history of chemistry. The resources for the study of the history of chemistry are comprehensive, with over half the titles published prior to the chemical revolution of the 1780s, and extend into related areas such as alchemy, pharmacy, medical botany, and applications such as dyeing and bleaching and distillation. Among the earliest works in this collection are books on alchemy and natural philosophy, including works by the medieval alchemists Paracelsus (1493-1541), Raimundus Lullius (c. 1240-1315), and Albertus Magnus (c. 1200-1280).

An extensive collection of material on dyeing and bleaching ranges from scarce early works such as Gioanventura Rosetti (fl. 1530-1548), Libro di tentoria intitolato plicto, che insegna a tenger panni..., printed in Venice in 1565, and Allerley Matkel, printed in Germany in 1532, to eighteenth and nineteenth century manuals for dying cloth and paper. Of particular interest are the many books with samples of dyed fabric and paper such as Notice du vert de Chine et de la teinture en vert chez les chinois by M. Natalis Rondot (1858), The American Woolen Manufacturer by George C. Burns (1872), and The Dyeing of Paper Pulp (1901). Of related interest are a number of manuscript books of recipes and chemical formulas for dyeing and bleaching.

Books that document the history of engineering include the most important works published during the Renaissance in a number of different branches of engineering: electricity, mining, hydraulics, and mechanics. Of particular interest are the numerous works on fortifications and metallurgy. Many of the pivotal works of Renaissance engineering are present including Georgius Agricola, De re metallica (three editions, 1556, 1561, and 1657), Agostino Ramelli, Le Diverse et artificiose machine (1588), Jacques Besson, Theatrum instrumentorum et machinarum (1578), and Domenico Fontana, Della trasportatione dell'obelisco Vaticano (1590).

The works of such seminal figures as Archimedes, John Dalton, Albert Einstein, Galileo Galilei, Stephen Hales, Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin, and Antoine Lavoisier are present in first or early editions of their works, as are hundreds of treatises by their lesser-known contemporaries. A number of manuscript collections support the printed science and technology holdings. Among them are the John Shirley Collection of manuscripts related to the the Renaissance scientist, Thomas Harriot; the papers of chemist and geologist James C. Booth, the first State Geologist of Delaware; and the papers of Hippolyte Dussauce, an industrial chemist who immigrated to the United States from France in 1860.

The University of Delaware Library's holdings are also extremely strong in the natural sciences. Horticulture, one of the most comprehensive collections, will be covered separately. Zoology and related agricultural sciences, which support the University's agriculture programs, are also significant. Of particular importance are the illustrated natural historybooks of the nineteenth century, including American Conchology and American Entomology by Thomas Say, Alexander Wilson's American Ornithology, the 1846 edition of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America by John James Audubon, and the rare 1860 chromolithographic edition of Audubon's Birds of America.

On Military Matters was first printed in 1472, although it had been circulating in manuscript for several years. Its eighty-two woodcuts illustrate the equipment necessary for the military and naval engineer, including revolving gun turrets, platforms and ladders for sieges, paddlewheels, a diver's suit, a lifeboat, and pontoon bridges. Although not revolutionary in terms of military strategy, the work gives a picture of fifteenth-century warfare. Valturio's work was the earliest book to be printed containing illustrations of a scientific or technical nature.

One of the great works of Renaissance engineering, Le diverse et artificiose machine was one of the first printed works to provide illustrations of such clarity and detail that machines could actually be constructed from them. The text is an adjunct to the plates, written to explain and enhance the drawings. Among the machines depicted are pumps, fountains, derricks, bridges, mills, metal-working machines, and looms.

This was the one-millionth volume added to the University of Delaware Library.


Domenico Fontana, 1543-1607.

The moving of the three hundred sixty-one ton obelisk from its position in the Circus Nero to the Piazza of St. Peter's in Rome was a major engineering event of sixteenth-century Italy. A competition on the method of moving the obelisk was won by the Swiss engineer Fontana who proposed a tower built over the structure, and gear consisting of a complex of pulleys and windlasses operated by nine hundred men and seventy-four horses to lower the obelisk onto a carriage which moved on wooden rollers.

This early treatise includes seventy-seven full-page woodcuts of machines. The most important shows the first representation of a steam turbine as well as the first application of steam to practical work. The turbine shaft ends in pestles for pounding materials in mortars.


Theatrum machinarvm novvm Georg Andreas Bockler.
Theatrum machinarvm novvm. Coloniae Agrippinae: Sumptibus Pauli Principis ..., 1662.

Theatrum machinarvm novvm is the principal seventeenth-century German work on mills, pumps, water works, and other machinery. It is of special importance because it describes and illustrates actual working machinery, not just the impractical "idea machines" typically found in the seventeenth-century engineering books. Among the machines illustrated are paper mills, a smithy with water-powered bellows, sawmills, and a grinding apparatus for sharpening tools.

This is the first edition of the book which helped establish the dyeing industry in France. It was written and published at the instigation of Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683), the controller general of finance under King Louis XIV of France, who carried out the program of reconstruction that helped make France the dominant economic power in Europe. The book describes in detail the preparation of dyes, sources of dyestuffs, and financial matters in the industry.


Benjamin Franklin, 1706-1790.
Experiments and Observations on Electricity Made at Philadelphia in America. London: Printed for David Henry; and sold by Francis Newberry, 1769.

A true Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin was a statesman, inventor, author, printer, and publisher. With Experiments and Observations on Electricity, he became the first American scientist to achieve an international reputation. The book is composed of a series of letters and reports addressed to Peter Collinson, a London merchant and naturalist. The most important of Franklin's findings was the proof that lightning is really an electrical phenomenon. As a result, Franklin proposed the fixing of iron rods at the tops of buildings to conduct the electric charges they collected into the wet subsoil, producing the first lightning conductor.


Antoine Laurent Lavoisier, 1743-1794.
Traité élémentaire de chimie: presenté dans un ordre nouveau et d'aprèe les découvertes modernes. A Paris: Chez Cuchet ..., 1789.

Lavoisier laid the foundation for modern chemistry and ended the supremacy of alchemy by establishing the modern concept of elements as substances that cannot be further decomposed. His experiments led him to explain many of the cyclical processes in animal and vegetable life and to carry out the earliest biochemical experiments. One of the most important consequenses of Lavoisier's work was the establishment of the concept of the conservation of matter.

Originally intended to accompany a technical treatise on machines, this atlas of models of trains, airplanes, and steam engines folds out in sections to display the inner workings of the machines. In addition to its significance as a technical work, Die Praxis is a fine example of lithographic printing at the beginning of the twentieth century.
