A Note about the Citations
in this Exhibition and Online Publication

The University of Delaware Library Special Collections houses many more diaries, scrapbooks, and autobiographical works than those represented in this exhibition. This publication serves as a catalog to works featured in the exhibition, but also as an introductory guide to selected sources for research using life writings.

The University of Delaware Library has a strong interest in these sources, acquiring over many years individual manuscript volumes for addition to a collection known as the Diaries, Journals, Ships' Logs Collection. Hundreds of diaries, autobiographical writings, and scrapbooks are also housed within manuscript and archival collections of personal and family papers.

Throughout this publication, citations are given which identify material shown as coming from the Diaries, Journals, Ships' Logs collection, or as part of a collection of personal papers. Many of these works were titled by their creators; in a few cases when the author did not give a title, the generic entry of "Diary" or "Journal" has been supplied. Quotations from these self works have retained original spelling and grammar to provide a transcription which interrupts as little as possible the creator's authentic expression.
