Protective Services
Newark's growth in the nineteenth century led to establishment of a police force with the hiring of a town bailiff in 1867. In 2008, the city's Police Department numbers sixty officers and twenty-one civilian employees.

A disastrous Christmas Day fire at the Dean Woolen Mill, 1886, prompted organization of the Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder Company in late 1887. The contemporary company is a combination volunteer and career department with over 100 volunteers and six employed emergency service providers who give "Service for Others," Aetna's motto.
