The Frank W. Tober Collection on Forgery includes eighty-five of Thomas J. Wise's letters written over a period of more than fifty years to a variety of individuals, including friends, scholars, collectors, and booksellers. Correspondents represented in the collection include H. Buxton Forman, Wise's friend and co-conspirator; Gabriel Wells, the American bookseller who campaigned strenuously on Wise's behalf following his implication in the scandal; A. Edward Newton, the American book collector; Charles Dealtry Locock, the well-known Shelley scholar; and Theodore Watts-Dunton, Swinburne's literary executor who gave Wise access to all printed and manuscript material in the poet's collection.

Wise's letters run the gamut from brief notes to friends to lengthy bibliographic treatises written in response to queries from scholars or collectors. In many of his letters, Wise boasts about the value of his pamphlets and bibliographies and muses on their scarcity. He usually denies the frequent requests he receives for copies of his publications, as most sell "within a few days" and typically claims not to have retained additional copies. Friends and booksellers frequently ask him to authenticate first editions, and Wise is quick to dispense bibliographical advice. Wise's health is another frequent topic. He suffered from bouts with gout and bronchitis, and a number of the letters in the Tober collection were dictated to his wife, Louise, and sometimes signed by her in his stead. This checklist also includes eight of Louise Wise's letters. When viewed as a whole, this collection of letters offers a fascinating look at the day-to-day life of Thomas J. Wise over a period of more than fifty years.
