THE TRILOGY

Although the publishing history of the Snopes family trilogy was accomplished in less than twenty years, it essentially took Faulkner a lifetime creating it. Many of his early short stories were but kernels for the later opus, and even Faulkner's experiences as a child were incorporated into the trilogy eventually. He revised and refined until the very end with the publication of The Mansion when his editors noticed discrepancies. Despite the author's lack of appreciation for "facts," he much preferred leaving the minor problems as they were but did make corrections. The themes played out in this vast work are the greed and ignobleness of humans contrasted with our altruistic side. In Faulkner's famous Nobel address, he spoke of writers forgetting that the only thing worth writing about is "of the human heart in conflict with itself" which provides the perfect summary of what the trilogy is about.
