Submitting Requests

Requests may be submitted to the Interlibrary Loan Office through the Library Web at http://www.lib.udel.edu/. From the library's home page, select "Forms," which is located under the University of Delaware Library banner at the top of the page, then select "Interlibrary Loan Request Form."Users may also go directly to the ILL page at www.lib.udel.edu/ud/ill/.

When requesting material via Interlibrary Loan, please take care to complete all fields as accurately and completely as possible to prevent any delays in ordering. Avoid using abbreviations and include the source of the citation in case the Interlibrary Loan staff needs to locate additional information to fulfill the request.

Picking Up Requested Material

Electronic Document Delivery is used to provide photocopied material obtained through Interlibrary Loan. Documents will be provided in PDF format for pickup via the Web. Notification of the item's availability and instructions for viewing will be sent to the user's University of Delaware e-mail address. Books, microforms, and other non-photocopy items must be picked up at the Interlibrary Loan Office in the Morris Library. A valid University of Delaware identification card must be presented by all users to pick up material. Users will be notified by e-mail when an item is available or if there are any problems with fulfilling a request.

Loan Period

The loan period for books, microforms, and other non-photocopy items is determined by the lending institution. In most cases, the loan period is two weeks. Renewals are contingent upon the lending institution. Institutions that loan materials reserve the right to recall items at any time for their users.

Renewal Requests

All requests for renewals of Interlibrary Loan materials must be received on or before the due date listed on the item's bookstrap, as long it does not indicate "no renewals." If the bookstrap indicates that renewals are not permitted, the lending library has already set that restriction on their materials; we will not place a renewal request and material must be returned by its due date. Otherwise, we will request one two-week extension of the due date. Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library; if our renewal request is denied, materials must be returned immediately to the Interlibrary Loan Office. Renewal requests submitted after the due date will not be honored; overdue items must be returned and patrons will be advised to place a new Interlibrary Loan request if the material is still needed.

Returning Borrowed Material

Books, microform, and other non-photocopied items may be returned to the Interlibrary Loan Office between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. After 5:00 p.m. and on weekends, materials may be returned at the Morris Library Circulation Desk. Please do not put materials borrowed through Interlibrary Loan in any of the book drops.

ILL materials must be returned promptly by the due date listed on the item's bookstrap. Failure to return ILL materials on time may result in suspension of ILL privileges until overdue items are returned. Users may also be charged for unreturned, lost, or damaged items.

Items Not Available Through ILL

Some materials which may not be available through Interlibrary Loan include:

Dissertations

Some institutions will allow dissertations to circulate via Interlibrary Loan. Dissertations from U.S. universities not available for loan are often available for sale from ProQuest.

Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
