University of Delaware faculty and Professional staff receive an extended loan borrowing period for books, books in microformat, maps and government documents. Extended loan materials have two due dates: January 15 or June 15. Books checked out from May 1 to November 30 receive a January 15 due date; books checked out from December 1 to April 30 receive a June 15 due date. (There may be slight variations in these dates depending upon the Library's calendar.)
Extended loan books with a January 15 due date can be renewed online through "Books I Have Checked Out" in DELCAT or by contacting the Morris Library Circulation Desk or any Branch Library when the Library is open.
Extended loan books with a June 15 due date cannot be renewed online or by telephone; they need to be physically brought to the Morris Library or any Branch Library for renewal or return. The University of Delaware Library fulfills its role as steward of a valuable resource by physically inspecting books on extended loan once a year to insure that they are still in existence and available for recall if needed by other researchers.Library users interested in obtaining material that is currently checked out can click on the "request" button in DELCAT, request a recall card at the Circulation Desk, or
use the online form. Circulating books are subject to recall if they are needed
by other users.
Users who have items that have been recalled are sent notice of revised due dates. Borrowers are assured use of material for 14 days, except when items are needed for Reserve Room use.
Reserve Room recalls must be rushed to serve course requirements; they are due immediately, even when library users have just borrowed the material that day.
If a recalled item is not returned by the recall due date, borrowing privileges are suspended until the needed item is returned and overdue recall fines may be charged.

Borrowers are individually responsible for keeping track of due dates and for returning or renewing library material by the date due. Overdue fines will not be waived on the basis of a failure to receive an overdue notice. Recalled items are due on the recall due date. Borrowing privileges are suspended if ten or more items are overdue or if a recalled item is not returned by the recall due date.
All fees and fines are assessed consistently. If library material is not returned or renewed promptly, an overdue fine of 25 cents per day to a maximum of $15 is charged. If library material is not returned or renewed by the sixtieth day after the due date, the borrower is charged a replacement fee. An invoice processing fee, in addition to the overdue fine, is also charged. If a billed item is returned undamaged, the replacement fee is waived. Processing fees are not waived, since the library has already incurred the cost of processing.
(For further details on borrower responsibility for damaged library materials, please see the "Damaged Library Materials" section on this page.)

DELCAT, the online catalog of materials in the University of Delaware Library, is accessible within the Library and also from outside the Library via the web.
Users with web access may reach the University of Delaware Library web at www.lib.udel.edu to access DELCAT and other information resources. Library Database access outside the University of Delaware is available only to University of Delaware students, faculty, and staff due to license restrictions.
Anyone may enter the University of Delaware Library and use books, periodicals, government documents, and electronic resources such as DELCAT within the Library without any type of borrower card.
A Public Borrower Card makes it possible for individuals who are not currently students, faculty, or staff at the University of Delaware to borrow books. A Public Borrower is an individual with a Public Borrower Card.
Delaware or out-of-state residents who are 18 years of age or older may purchase a Public Borrower Card for their use. Each time a book is borrowed or renewed within the Library the individual borrowing the materials presents his or her Public Borrower Card as well as photo identification such as a driver's license. A Public Borrower Card may not be loaned to another individual for borrowing.
To purchase (or renew) a Public Borrower Card, stop at the Morris Library Circulation desk at any time the Library is open. (Call 302-831-BOOK (2665) for Library hours.) Photo identification and proof of residency such as a driver's license is required to purchase a card.
The annual non-refundable fee for a Public Borrower Card covers 12 months of borrowing privileges beginning with the date the card is purchased:
| Delaware residents | $ 25 annual fee |
| Out-of-state residents | $ 60 annual fee |
Personal checks can be accepted for payment at any time. (Cash purchases of cards are available only when the register at the Student Multimedia Design Center is open.)
Students and faculty from Delaware State University and Delaware Technical and Community College have borrowing privileges at the University of Delaware Library at no cost, as part of a reciprocal agreement, and must present their institution's ID card and proof of current registration to receive a borrower card at the Morris Library Circulation Desk. Graduate Students from Chesapeake Information and Research Library Alliance (CIRLA) institutions can obtain borrowing privileges by presenting a completed CIRLA Direct Borrower form and their institution's ID card.
A Public Borrower may borrow most library materials for 30 days. All items are subject to recall by other users. Public Borrowers are unable to use authenticated online forms such as "Books I Have Checked Out" because they are not eligible to receive the UDelNet IDs these services require.
Items may be renewed as long as the Public Borrower Card is valid (unless another user has recalled the book.) Public Borrowers may call the Morris Library Circulation Desk at (302) 831-2455 when the library is open to have a library staff member renew their books. If you have any questions about the material currently checked out on your account and their due dates, please contact the Morris Library Circulation Desk when the library is open.
