To search for periodical articles, you must use a printed index or an electronic index on a computer called a database. Printed indexes and databases both contain references for magazine and journal articles.
The purpose of searching printed indexes and databases is to gather references. A reference includes the title, author, periodical, date and volume number for the article it represents. A periodical reference contains the information you need to find a magazine or journal article in the Library.
Note: Another name for references you may hear is citations.
